Even a cursory look in the local bookstore or on the Internet reveals a plethora of textbooks on counseling skills. All of these books cover the same essential territory and impart the same basic information regarding the elements of counseling skills. In reading through these books, though, we felt that there was something missing. Many try so hard to cover so many bases that they lose their voice: they lack a strong underlying theme or element to guide new clinicians in their development.
